How Mohit Yadav built Minimalist — and risked it all

Mohit Yadav joined the panel of Shark Tank India in Season 5 as a new investor, bringing with him a distinctive profile that combines formal finance training, experience in building consumer brands, and a strong emphasis on transparency-led products.

Listed among the Season 5 sharks on SonyLIV’s official show page, Yadav appears alongside returning panelists and other new entrants in the show’s expanded line-up.

Trained as a Chartered Accountant, Yadav is widely known as the co-founder of Minimalist, a direct-to-consumer skincare brand built around active ingredients and science-backed claims.

Founded in 2020 with Rahul Yadav under the banner of Uprising Science Pvt. Ltd., the brand rose to prominence during India’s D2C beauty wave, positioning itself as premium yet accessible.

Minimalist’s clarity of formulation, focus on ingredient transparency, and clinical aesthetic helped it stand out in a cluttered market—eventually attracting attention from industry incumbents.

In January 2025, Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) signed a definitive agreement to acquire a controlling stake in the company.

As reported by Reuters, HUL’s deal involved purchasing 90.5% of Uprising Science for ₹2,955 crore, while The Economic Times later confirmed completion of the acquisition for ₹2,706.44 crore after regulatory approvals. The differences in reported figures reflect common deal variables such as structure, timing, and treatment of debt.

Yadav has spoken candidly about the personal stakes of building Minimalist, including a period when he raised capital by leveraging his home—a moment he describes as a test of both risk appetite and conviction.

These lived experiences, alongside the brand’s rapid growth, have shaped his approach to investing.

On Shark Tank India, Yadav is often positioned as part of a deliberate effort to deepen sectoral expertise within the panel, especially in high-growth consumer categories.

He has already been seen closing deals on-screen, including one alongside fellow new shark Kunal Bahl.

In media interviews and podcast appearances, Yadav consistently frames the success of Minimalist in terms of disciplined execution: a clear product thesis, evidence-based marketing, and an emphasis on trust in a space often dominated by inflated claims.

This background informs the investor lens he brings to the show, where he tends to prioritise fundamentals such as unit economics, customer retention, and brand credibility—especially when evaluating D2C and consumer-facing startups.

His addition to the show broadens not just the panel’s expertise, but also its orientation towards performance-driven, long-term brand building.
