Mukesh Sharma: The crorepati chaatwala of Nehru Place

Mukesh Sharma, widely known as Delhi’s “Crorepati Chaat King” or “Crorepati Chaatwala”, runs Sharmaji Chaat Bhandar, a modest street-food stall in Nehru Place best known for one signature item: dahi bhalla.

His public image rests on a striking contrast. He is often seen arriving in a BMW, unloading containers of curd and spice boxes, and then transforming a simple folding table into a bustling chaat counter. Within minutes, queues begin to form.

Sharma’s rise is typically described not as a viral breakthrough but as a steady climb.

According to multiple accounts, he began selling in Nehru Place in 1989, when a plate of dahi bhalla reportedly cost ₹2.

The price has gradually increased to around ₹40, yet regulars say the taste has remained consistent. That continuity — “the same taste for decades” — has become central to his reputation and brand.

Consistency, more than spectacle, appears to underpin his success. Reports describe him starting preparations early at home and bringing pre-prepared components to the stall.

Nearly 40 kg of fresh curd is said to be used daily, whisked smooth and chilled carefully. Each serving is finished with a closely guarded 16-ingredient masala, which gives the dish its distinctive balance of spice and tang.

The emphasis on controlled texture, cold curd and repeatable preparation features prominently in profiles explaining his enduring popularity.

Equally notable is what Sharma has not done. Despite reported financial success, he has not moved into a permanent shop.

Instead, he continues to operate from a simple table in Nehru Place. This small-format setup — no elaborate storefront, just speed and steady demand — has become integral to his identity.

The “crorepati” label is generally presented as reported rather than formally audited. The narrative centres less on premium pricing than on high volume and loyal repeat customers.

In recent years, social media and food vloggers have amplified his story, turning his stall into a visual symbol of Delhi’s street-food enterprise: modest in form, scaled through consistency rather than expansion.
