Karandeep Anand takes the helm at Character.AI

Karandeep Anand has rapidly emerged as one of the most influential technology leaders shaping artificial intelligence in 2025.

Most recently, he was appointed chief executive of Character.AI, the fast-growing AI platform known for its conversational agents and creative AI companions.

His appointment puts him at the helm of one of the sector’s most visible and controversial consumer-facing products at a time when questions about safety, regulation and the social impact of AI are intensifying.

Before joining Character.AI, Anand built a formidable track record in senior product and executive roles at some of the world’s largest technology firms. At Meta (then Facebook), he served as vice-president and head of business products, overseeing core tools such as Marketplace, advertising solutions and enterprise offerings used by millions of businesses.

Earlier, he spent around 15 years at Microsoft, working on Azure and other foundational platforms, gaining deep experience in cloud and enterprise technologies that underpin much of today’s AI infrastructure.

He later moved into fintech as president and chief product officer at Brex, where he helped shape product strategy and scale services for business customers.

This blend of product depth, enterprise scale and hands-on execution made him a natural candidate to lead one of AI’s most-watched start-ups.

Anand’s arrival as Character.AI’s CEO in June 2025 came at a pivotal moment for the company.

The platform had experienced explosive growth, particularly among younger users drawn to its personalised, human-like chatbots, but it was also facing mounting scrutiny over safety, moderation and the psychological effects of AI companions.

One of his first priorities was to overhaul the “safety stack”. Under his leadership, Character.AI introduced a ban on open-ended chatbot conversations for users under 18, framing the measure as a way to prioritise user well-being amid broader concerns about the impact of unfiltered AI interactions on minors.

At the same time, Anand has stressed that safety and innovation must advance together. He has signalled plans to improve the platform’s memory systems, user experience and multimedia features so that Character.AI remains engaging and useful while reducing risk. Public appearances have underscored this dual focus.

On stage at TechCrunch Disrupt 2025, he spoke about the future of human-like AI companions and the ethical dilemmas they pose, arguing that the industry must pair ambitious product development with clear guardrails and transparency about what these systems can and cannot do.

Anand’s growing global profile was recognised later in 2025, when TIME magazine named him one of the “Architects of AI” in its Person of the Year coverage, highlighting his role in shaping how AI will be woven into everyday life. For Character.AI, his leadership marks a shift towards more structured, enterprise-hardened product thinking in a company that rose quickly on the back of viral consumer appeal.

For the wider industry, he has become one of the prominent Indian-origin voices arguing that the next phase of AI will be defined not only by model breakthroughs, but by the way platforms balance creativity, safety and societal responsibility.
