Abdur Rahim, Death Row Convict

Former Director General of National Security Intelligence (NSI) Brig Gen (retd) Abdur Rahim, a death row convict in 10-truck arms haul cases in Chattogram, died at a Dhaka hospital with Covid-19 infection. Quoting Mahbubul Islam, jailor of Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj The Daily Star reported that he breathed his last at the intensive care unit of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital around 6:00am. He was admitted to the hospital on July 31 after he tested Covid-19 positive at Kashimpur Central Jail-2. In 2014, a Chattogram court handed down death penalty to 14 people, including Abdur Rahim, ex-ministers Lutfozzaman Babar and Motiur Rahman Nizami, for smuggling 10 truckloads of arms into Chattogram during the BNP-led government's tenure in 2004.

Professor emeritus of Dhaka University (DU) Najma Chowdhury and a caretaker government adviser, has died of COVID-19. The prominent academic, who pioneered in establishing women studies in Bangladesh, breathed her last at a Dhaka hospital on Sunday morning. AKM Fazlur Rahman, Judge

Justice AKM Fazlur Rahman, a retired judge of the High Court and former chairman of Administrative Appellate Tribunal, died from Covid-19. He was 75. He was undergoing treatment at Anwer Khan Modern Hospital in Dhaka. He left behind his wife, two daughters, a son and a host of well-wishers to mourn his death, Barrister Md Shakhawat Hossain Khan, husband of the elder daughter of Justice Rahman, told The Daily Star. He said Justice Rahman was buried at his family graveyard in Pankundo village under Dohar upazila, Dhaka. Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, Law Minister Anisul Huq, Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim and Attorney General AM Amin Uddin expressed deep shock at the death.

Dr Jakia Rashid Shafir a gynaecologist at Tangail General Hospital has died of Covid-19 even after receiving both doses of vaccine. According to reports, Dr Jakia who lived in the town’s East Adalatpara area, breathed her last while undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka. Quoting Tangail General Hospital Resident Medical Officer Dr Shafiqul Islam Sajib Dhaka Tribune reported that Dr Jakia had tested Covid-19 positive a week ago and was admitted to CMH. She was put on life support after her condition deteriorated on Sunday. She passed away on Monday night, he added. Dr Jakia was the wife of Brigadier Mizanur of the Bangladesh Army medical corps. So far, two doctors have died in the district.

Doctor Najib Mohammad 66, head of the intensive care unit of Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital and Gonoshasthaya Dialysis Center, died of Covid-19 at a Dhaka hospital. According to reports, he breathed his last at Bangladesh Specialized Hospital around 11:20am. In a press release, Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) prayed for the salvation of his departed soul while expressing profound sympathy to the bereaved family. The number of doctors and surgeons died of Covid-19 in the country so far rises to 174.

Senior Judicial Magistrate of Jhalokathi district in southern Bangladesh Mosammat Sania Aktar has died of Covid-19. According to report published in Dhaka Tribune, the 28-year-old breathed her last while undergoing treatment at the Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) in Barisal at around 10:30am on Wednesday. Sania, who was also seven months pregnant, tested positive for the deadly virus on July 12.
