Munir Mohamad Mangal ‑ an Afghan general whose professional military career spanned more than 40 years – passed away on May 2, 2020 after contracting Covid-19.   Mangal served in high-level military and government positions, most latterly as the Commander of the Afghan National Police, before his retirement in 2016.   Mangal was born in Samkanay District, Paktia Province, Afghanistan, in 1950. He was sent to Kabul, where he attended primary and military school. Theodore A. Monette Jr. ‑ an American army colonel who had served as FEMA director of the Office of Federal Coordinating Officer Operations – died on March 30, 2020 due to Covid-19.   Monette was a graduate of the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. He joined the Federal Emergency Management Agency after serving 30 years in the U.S. Army. He was the senior federal official in charge of response and recovery operations after the 2001 September 11 attack on New York City. He also guided the response and relief effort after Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita. Nasser Shabani ‑ an Iranian general and senior commander of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) – succumbed to Covid-19 on 13 March 2020. He took credit for using Houthi rebels to target Saudi oil tankers. Shabani began his military career in 1982 during the Iran-Iraq War. He participated in suppressing the Amol uprising the same year. In the final year of the Iran-Iraq War, he was promoted to become one of several fronts of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. He played a key role in Operation Mersad, and later wrote several books about the war.
