Liu Fan ‑ a deputy chief nurse of Wuchang Hospital in Wuhan, Hubei, China – passed away on 14 February 2020 due to coronavirus. She was the first nurse to die from SARS-CoV-2 infection, at the age of 59. Her death caused strong internet reactions across China. Both her parents and her brother died of the coronavirus before her, which led many to characterise their deaths as "family extinction" (灭门). Many saw her work conditions during the outbreak as unacceptable. Initially, the news of her death was declared a "fabricated rumour". Hong Ling, geneticist

Hong Ling ‑ a Chinese geneticist, professor and doctoral advisor at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology – died on 7 February 2020  due to Covid-19 infection at Wuhan Union Hospital. Hong was educated at Wuhan University, majoring in biology, where he graduated in July 1987 and obtained a bachelor's degree. In December 1994, he graduated from the University of Arizona with a doctor's degree in biochemistry. After graduation, he started his career as a biochemist at Department of Molecular & Cell Biology (MCB), of University of California, Berkeley.
