Henri Kichka, holocaust survivor

Henri Kichka a Belgian writer and Holocaust survivor who was one of the leading figures in Holocaust education in Belgium died on 25 April 2020 at the age of 94 in Brussels as a result of COVID-19. Kichka was the only member of his family to have survived the deportation of Belgian Jews to camps in Central and Eastern Europe. He began speaking on the importance of the memory of those who perished at the hands of the Nazis in the 1980s and spoke widely on his experiences to school audience. In 2005, published his autobiography, Une adolescence perdue dans la nuit des camps, prefaced by Serge Klarsfeld. He is the father of cartoonist Michel Kichka. He was a member of the Socialist Party (PS), which is part of the Party of European Socialists, and sat on the European Parliament's Committee on Culture and Education. Henri Madelin –a French Jesuit priest and theologian – passed away on 8 April 2020 after contracting Covid-19. Madelin was born on 26 April 1936 in a family of nine children. His family moved to Blois in 1939, where Madelin practiced scouting. Born to primary school teachers in a small village close to Domrémy, the birthplace of Joan of Arc, Henri Richelet spent his childhood and adolescence in the neighbouring small town of Neufchâteau (Vosges).
