Billy Joe Driver, mayor

Billy Joe Driver, the longtime Clanton Mayor, passed away on July 9, 2020, after complication from COVID-19. The 84-year-old mayor was admitted to St. Vincent’s Chilton on Sunday (June 28) for treatment of the virus. On the following Tuesday, Driver was transferred to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Birmingham. Driver was first elected to the Clanton city council in 1972. In his nearly 50 years in politics Driver never lost a race. Prior to becoming politically active, Driver had worked for the city of Clanton since 1953. In 2011 Business Alabama Magazine named Driver as one of Alabama’s favorite mayors. KP Sunil, who worked as a driver in the Excise Department, died of Covid infection on June 18, 2020 morning at Kannur government Medical College in Kerala. The 28-year-old was admitted with pneumonia and was put on ventilator support for the last three days. He later passed away after he tested positive for coronavirus. So far, 21 people have died of coronavirus in Kerala. Mike Winkler – a bus driver with the public transportation agency King County Metro Transit in Washington state ‑ died from complications related to COVID-19 on June 17. Winkler, 71, passed away after several weeks fighting the virus. His domestic partner Karla Mestl said he contracted COVID-19 in March. Sergio Bretado Rodríguez – an Ambulance Driver at IMSS, Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico – passed away due to COVID-19. It was reported on May 15, 2020. Sergio was an ambulance operator at the Mexican Social Security Institute (Imss) and constantly had to assist in the transfer of patients from Covid-19, until he became infected.
