Sonia Abdel-Azim Aref – a General Medicine specialist in Egypt – passed away due to COVID-19. Sonia was 64 years old. It was reported on April 12, 2020.

The police had to stop 23 people and fire tear gas on the others so that the Ministry of Health could bury the doctor.

The crowd gathered in front of the ambulance, which transported the doctor's body for burial in a cemetery owned by her husband in the village of Shubra El-Bahou.

In front of the intransigence of the people, the ambulance headed towards the nearby village of Mit al-Amil to bury the woman in her hometown, but the scene itself was repeated after the people there objected to her burial.

The ambulance returned to Shubra al-Bahou village, where it was able to bury the medical after the police intervened.

While the governor of Dakahlia decided to give the name of the deceased doctor, Sonia Abdel Azim, to a school in her village, in honor of her fighting the Corona virus during her work and laying down her life.
