Maria Lopez – a Nurse at UIC Chicago, Chicago, Illinois – passed away on 4 May 2020 after suffering from COVID-19. Maria was 63 years old.
“She has an enormous heart of gold,” said Zervakis Brent, a nurse anesthetist. “She was like a mama to everybody.”
Pier Giulianotti, chief of general surgery and robotics at UI Health, said the skills she brought to surgeries calmed tense environments and offered a wealth of knowledge.
“She was making the atmosphere more serene,” he said. “There will really be an empty space, and we will miss her a lot.”
