Norman Austria – a Healthcare Assistant at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton (UHDB), Derby, England – passed away on 13 May 2020, due to COVID-19. Norman was 61 years old.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

A healthcare assistant at the Royal Derby Hospital is the latest NHS worker to have died after contracting coronavirus.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Norman Austria, 61, was described as a "loved and respected" colleague who brought a "sense of calm" with him to work.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

His death comes on a day when Boris Johnson told MPs that 275 healthcare workers had died in the UK from Covid-19 in what he called a "deeply horrifying" toll.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Originally from the Philippines, Mr Austria died on May 13, 2020, after several weeks of battling the disease in hospital.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Although he had only just joined the team on Ward 405, colleagues said Mr Austria was already "a highly thought of" member of staff.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

According to his colleagues, Mr Austria could often be found singing to his patients who always responded well to his presence.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Tributes to Mr Austria describe him as a "gentle soul and a dedicated professional" who will be remembered fondly by those who knew him.<\/p>\r\n\r\n
