Vernice Logan had overcome a life of being in and out of prison and\u00a0selling and using drugs to\u00a0becoming\u00a0a\u00a0beacon of light and hope to many. She died due to complications from COVID-19 on Dec. 15 at Harper Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A resident of Detroit for more than 30 years, Logan was born and raised in Highland Park. She was the oldest of five siblings and a graduate of Highland Park High School. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Logan had kept a promise to her family after her last release\u00a0from prison\u00a0that she would never go away again as long as she had breath in her body, according to daughter Collice Williams, who noted\u00a0that her mother\u00a0kept that promise and celebrated\u00a022 years of sobriety before she died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 70-year-old’s new lease on life was dedicated to serving and saving others by mentoring and sponsoring young women in their fight to overcome drugs and street life in Detroit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Logan was an advocate and spokesperson for Narcotics Anonymous. She traveled internationally and throughout the United States delivering messages of hope. Her focus was on helping battered and abused women because she could identify with what they were going through, Williams recalled. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was very hard in the beginning of the pandemic to stop her from going out because Narcotics Anonymous was a big part of her life and she was determined to save as many people as possible,\u201d Williams said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a while, Logan, who was diabetic and had kidney disease, was taken to the hospital by her daughter and tested\u00a0positive there for COVID-19.\u00a0While in the hospital, her condition deteriorated fast. Her oxygen levels dropped, and she was put on life support. She later passed away.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
