Mkayla Robinson, an active eighth-grader at Raleigh High School in Mississippi succumbed to COVID-19 just hours after receiving a positive test result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the Mississippi Free Press,Mkayla Robinson, 13, had attended school in Smith County, Mississippi, for most of last week before quickly succumbing to complications from the virus on Aug. 14<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was not clear on Sunday whether Mkayla, a junior high band member, had received the vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
School reopened August 6 and students were not required to wear face coverings but had the option to bring them in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, within the first few days of school, 76 students and 11 educators tested positive in the district, forcing an additional 411 students and 11 educators to quarantine, the paper reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The school decided to require masks on Aug. 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAfter much consideration for the welfare of our children, Smith County Schools will require all personnel and students to wear a mask,\u201d the district said in a statement, according to the Mississippi Free Press<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mississippi required masks for schools last fall, but at a press conference Friday, Gov. Tate Reeves said he had no plans to establish a mask mandate this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI don\u2019t have any intention of issuing a statewide mask mandate for any category of Mississippians at this time.
